Hey everyone! I am having a great start with this summer’s Tell Me What to Read books. Last year, I did not even review a single book.
I knew about Kimberly Brubaker Bradley because I read her book Jefferson’s Sons a while back (which I highly recommend, by the way). I had heard amazing things about The War That Saved My Life, so I was really excited to read it. And guess what? It lived up to the hype.
ALL ABOUT THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE
Jamie and Ada live in London with their mother. Their mother works at a pub but is not very kind to them. Ada, in particular, suffers because she has a foot problem (later revealed to be an untreated clubfoot). Her mother is embarrassed by it that she never lets Ada leave their small apartment.
Jamie, who is younger, roams freely around the city with other boys. Ada, tired of her mother’s mistreatment, secretly teaches herself to walk despite the pain caused by her foot condition.
One day, Jamie tells their mother and Ada that London’s children are being sent to the countryside to protect them from Hitler’s war. Ada refuses to stay behind and sneaks out with Jamie to board the train to the country.
In the countryside, Ada realizes how little she knows about the world. She asks Jamie about simple things like grass and how to use a toilet. When they arrive, they are the only children not chosen by the townspeople for care.
A woman named Susan Smith, mourning her best friend’s recent death, reluctantly agrees to take care of Jamie and Ada.
The children believe Susan is wealthy because they receive three full meals a day, and she buys them new clothes. When they learn that Susan receives a small allowance for their care, they playfully suggest she take in children to become even richer (although Susan knows the allowance is quite modest).
Ada, who has a club foot, discovers that her condition is not her fault. Surprisingly, most people do not seem bothered by it. While a few remarks are made, nobody shares her mother’s extreme view that Ada should never leave the house (which takes Jamie some time to accept).
Ada’s world expands as she learns to read, forms cautious friendships, and discovers her love for horses. However, she worries that this newfound life will not last. When the war ends, will she be forced to return to her mother?
The book beautifully weaves together Ada’s growth, the wartime backdrop, and her friendship with a wealthy neighbor girl. There is no predictable story arc, making it a captivating read. The writing vividly captures Ada’s emotions, from confusion and anger to moments of heartbreak and humour.
