While the novel tackles mature themes, it does so with sensitivity and restraint, eschewing explicit content typically found in new adult novels.
This thoughtful approach makes the story accessible to a wider range of readers, making it an absolute must-read for anyone who loves sports, character-driven fiction, and stories exploring the human experience’s complexities.

I thoroughly enjoyed that the book was narrated solely from Mickey James’ perspective, allowing for a deeply personal and immersive experience. This singular perspective made the story truly Mickey’s, enabling us to delve deep into his thoughts, emotions, and struggles.
I found it remarkable how the author tackled depression with such nuance and authenticity, avoiding romanticization or oversimplification. Mickey’s journey with depression is portrayed with raw honesty, showcasing the complexity and difficulty of living with mental health struggles.
The author masterfully depicts Mickey’s initial attempts to cope with his depression, including his unhealthy reliance on alcohol and his gradual progression towards acceptance, acknowledgement, and, ultimately, more positive coping mechanisms. This thoughtful portrayal acknowledges the real challenges people face when living with depression.
Even more impressive is how the story seamlessly weaves in themes of LGBT+ identity, new relationships, and coming out in professional sports, all without feeling rushed or underdeveloped. The author gives each aspect the space to breathe, creating a narrative that feels organic and true to Mickey’s character.
While romance is a significant aspect of the narrative, I crave more moments of tender connection between Mickey and Jaysen beyond their intense rivalry and heated arguments. The enemies-to-lovers trope is expertly woven throughout the story, but I desired a deeper exploration of their blossoming relationship, particularly in the moments when they’re not at odds.
The few instances of intimacy between them felt somewhat abrupt, with the narrative often fading to black or glossing over the details. I longed for a more gradual build-up to these moments to better understand the progression of their emotional connection.
It’s not that I needed explicit content, but rather a more nuanced portrayal of their relationship’s development. At times, their constant arguing and simultaneous physical intimacy felt somewhat disjointed, leaving me yearning for a more comprehensive understanding of their emotional journey.
Perhaps I’m greedy for more of their story, but I believe a deeper exploration of their connection would have enriched the narrative even further.
This book boasts a refreshingly inclusive and diverse cast of characters. It features a sex-positive and LGBT+ inclusive narrative that also explores polygamy. The characters’ ethnic diversity adds depth and richness to the story, creating a vibrant and engaging backdrop.
The secondary characters, including Mickey’s ice hockey teammates and his five sisters, each with boyfriends or girlfriends, bring a delightful and lively energy to the story.
The novel also spotlights women in sports, with Mickey being a wonderful ally and supporter of his sisters, all of whom are involved in sports or are professional athletes. The book makes fantastic comments about gender and sports, highlighting the importance of support and encouragement for women in these fields. Mickey’s unwavering support for his sisters is particularly noteworthy, showcasing a positive and uplifting portrayal of gender dynamics and sibling relationships.
