Review: “The Chemist” by Stephenie Meyer

This review contains spoilers, so proceed with caution! If you plan to read this book, you might want to skip this review.

Firstly, I’m a huge fan of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series and “The Host.” When I heard about “The Chemist,” I was excited to dive back into her writing after her long break. The premise a thriller sounded promising. Unfortunately, the book didn’t meet my expectations and turned out to be one of the worst I’ve ever read.

The beginning was a slog. It felt like an information dump, crammed into the first 50 pages. While the backstory was explained well, it lacked pacing. I prefer books where characters interact, breaking up lengthy descriptions with dialogue. But here, it was paragraph after paragraph, making it frustrating to read.

Next, the insta-love between Daniel and Alex grated on my nerves. Daniel’s immediate certainty that Alex was “the one” made my eyes roll. Then came the torture scene, which briefly piqued my interest. But alas, the excitement fizzled out, leaving me annoyed and contemplating abandoning the book. The predictable twist involving Daniel’s twin brother didn’t help matters Alex didn’t see it coming, but it was obvious to me.

Now, let’s talk about Daniel. He wakes up from torture only to worry about Alex’s well-being. He defends her, claiming she had no choice but to torture him it’s her job, apparently. This made no sense to me. Who defends their torturer? And then Daniel gets angry at Kevin for trying to kill Alex, all while professing his newfound love for her. It’s a messy plot.

Around 100 pages in, the story stalls. Daniel obsesses over Alex, wondering if she loves him back. They cook, dance, sing, and shoot guns together, accompanied by a pack of dogs. The slow pace left me bored.

In summary, “The Chemist” fell short of its potential, and I found it disappointing.
