This TikTok phenomenon tells the story of two scientists trying to handle a fake romance and going for an extreme love experiment. Full of humor, plot surprises and emotionally charged scenes The Love Hypothesis is a pure contemporary romance, a masterpiece of the genre.
Olive Smith starts her third year as a Ph. D. candidate without any belief in love and the relationships whereas Anh her best friend has no doubts concerning the love and the links that never break down. Olive faces a challenge of convincing Anh that a happily ever after is, in fact, in her heart when a mix-up occurs.
As scientists, the pair aspires to find evidence, so Olive comes up with a strange plan for a love experiment. This weird approach makes her get into trouble with a supposedly conceited professor, Adam. To her surprise, he accepts to take part in her love farce. The fabricated love story is given a fascinating twist when, posing as a couple, Olive and Adam attend a pivotal conference together.
The initially agreed-upon terms and conditions of their fake relationship unravels as Adam throws himself at Olive. In the middle of the mess, one thing is clear: for this enthusiastic scientist and seemingly grumpy professor, love will seize the day.
If 10 year old son notices that the book you are immersed in comes from TikTok, it grabs your attention. To be honest, I started reading Ali Hazelwood book because of numerous recommendations on bookstagram.
Certainly, I am not usually attracted to modern romance novels with false relationships and the scientific theme usually leads me in another direction. Nevertheless, I am glad that I did read The Love Hypothesis because this book finally answered my question about why this book is famous.
The main character seems smart, with a little attitude, a bit on the edge. Hazelwood carefully goes into the details of Olive back story, revealing her troubled past. This character analysis is congruous with Olive nature and its information has been beneficial to my understanding and tolerance of her casualness.
Olive, I found that I started to respect her especially in the way she explored the field of science. The Love Hypothesis becomes a well deserved tribute to women, a perspective that is rather needed. This element of the story undoubtedly deserves my applause. With all the drama concerning the elaborate love charade and secrets kept from her friend, Olive true intentions came across, proving that she had the right intentions.
In the unlikely hero of this tale, a crusty professor Adam Carlsen, Hazelwood has brought into sharp contrast Olive character. Adam makes a wonderful book boyfriend and it is not a surprise that he gets his fame on Instagram and TikTok. While reading the story, I began to suspect Adam intentions but with time he gradually won more respect in my eyes.
The main conference storyline presents Adam as a true hero who serves as a science knight on white horse to rescue Olive. While I generally do not like the fake relationship trope, I liked the way this relationship dynamic manifested. Incredibly, the story also unfolded with steamy scenes which managed to surprise me. While I did not feel entirely at ease with these episodes, my curiosity made me flip over the pages.
Covering various themes including women in science, stem, higher education, gender bias, assault, power dynamics, expectations, past trauma, and male dominated settings, The Love Hypothesis is beyond the typical fake romance. Certain parts of the story by Ali Hazelwood resonated well with me while others did not and I would rather pass on them. Overall, I had a mixed reaction to The Love Hypothesis.
